An action in protection of Bulgarian Nature started today, aimed to stop illegal construction going on in Rila National Park and in various protected areas on the seaside (to name a few - Strandja, Irakli.....)
The action started using an old Bulgarian tradition to scare evil spirits away by ritual dancing and music of "kukeri" (people dressed in bear skins, wearing masks and ringing with bells). Kukeri visited the parliament aiming to clean the evil spirits residing there. This was followed by activists hanging а huge poster from a building next to the Ministry of Environment and Waters reading "Rila hangs by a thread" coupled with meetings in the Parliament and in the Ministry with no result worthwhile to mention (apparently the Deputy Enviromental Ministers were much more concerned about the economy than the environment).
The culmination of the event was a lights procession alongside the streets of Sofia. The lights on the heads of thousand Bulgarians were symbolic way to help the State see a cleaner path for development - one in harmony with nature vs its today's position - serving obidiently any developer who has a bit of cash in his pocket but doesn't know what else to do with this cash, apart from pouring concrete into unique habitats and calling this "investment project".
The number of people who gathered was impressive for the cold weather -
